A clerk at Kam's Market in Bay Point fatally shot an armed robbery suspect who had entered the convenience store and pistol-whipped him Sunday.
A security camera at the store recorded the masked suspect enter at about 11 p.m. and repeatedly strike the clerk with a handgun
The footage also shows the clerk, identified by KPIX-5 as Mark Kasprowicz, pulling out a gun from near the register and fighting with the robber. Kasprowicz, who served in the Air Force, told KPIX that he fired once at his assailant without taking aim.
The would-be thief ran out of the store shortly before another man is seen on the video coming to aid the cashier. The man picks up the clerk's gun and then leaves the store.
The suspect ran out of the store at 211 Port Chicago Highway down Lynbrook Street and died. A second suspect who allegedly took part in the attempted robbery apparently fled, KPIX reported.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
