SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- A fast rise in gasoline prices is hitting Bay Area motorists in the pocketbook.
The daily AAA gas price report Monday showed California's statewide gas prices as the highest in the nation, averaging $4.03 a gallon for regular-grade fuel. A week ago, that fuel cost an average of $3.74 a gallon; a month ago, it was $3.58.
Bay Area prices have shown a similar leap. San Francisco's $4.14 a gallon is the priciest gas in the nation. AAA reports regular-grade fuel is averaging $4.02 a gallon in San Jose and $4.03 a gallon in Oakland.
Analysts blame the price spike in part on the attacks that damaged Saudi Arabia's key oil production facility earlier in September. Another factor: maintenance issues at two refineries in Southern California.
