Gov. Gavin Newsom has temporarily banned evictions for tenants affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
The executive order issued by Newsom Friday protects renters through May 31 who cannot pay their landlord.
"The order prohibits landlords evicting tenants for nonpayment of rent and prohibits enforcement of eviction by law enforcement or courts,' the order says.
The order takes effect immediately and applies to tenants whose rent is due beginning April 1.
It's the latest in a series of actions taken by Newsom to mitigate the upheaval unleashed by the virus. On Wednesday, several major banks agreed to a 90-day grace period on mortgage payments for borrowers who've been hurt by the outbreak.
