Firefighters lost ground in their attempts to contain the raging Kincade Fire on Sunday as it grew to 54,298 acres in Sonoma County.

The flames were 5% contained Sunday night, according to Cal Fire, down from 10% when the fire had destroyed 30,000 acres Sunday morning.

Officials said that 94 buildings had been destroyed, but that 80,000 more were still threatened.

Two firefighters have been injured, including one who airlifted to reach treatment. The other firefighter had minor injuries.

No civilians have died or been reported missing.

Cities and towns across wine country were emptied of residents as mandatory evacuation orders forced 180,000 people to leave their homes.

With red-flag fire warnings in many areas of California, millions of people have lost electricity. In the Bay Area, PG&E had cut power to 447,000 customers as part of the outages that the company hopes will prevent causing fires during extreme weather.

After conditions improve, PG&E will inspect power lines and equipment before restoring power, a process that may take 48 hours even in areas where there is no damage. Any relief could be short lived for many customers, however, as strong winds return to the region, raising the likelihood of another outage.

The upheaval was affecting many parts of public life. All schools in Sonoma County's 40 public school districts will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Sonoma State University will also be closed today and tomorrow.

Santa Rosa Junior College has cancelled classes at all campus for Monday.

In Oakland, 16 of the public schools will be closed.

In Pacifica, all public schools will be closed as will Pacific Bay Christian School and Good Shepherd School.  City of Pacifica child care sites will be closed as well.

UC Berkeley has also announced that their campus will be closed Monday. In Solano County, the Cal Maritime Campus will be closed.
