Another legal battle between California and the Trump Administration is expected to ignite.
This time, it involves a California law that mandates insurers to cover abortions.
The Trump administration has accused California of violating the Wheldon Amendment by allowing health facilities to post free or low-cost abortion services.
The announcement from the Health and Human Services Department came as President Donald Trump addressed the annual anti-abortion March for Life in Washington. A version of the march will take place in San Francisco this weekend too.
Roger Severino with the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services said California is violating a federal law. That law prohibits federal money from going to states that discriminate against healthcare providers that don't provide coverage for abortions.
But California Attorney General Javier Becerra called the accusations baseless, and said his office will continue to protect a woman’s constitutional right to abortion.
Elizabeth Gill, Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Northern California, said the Trump administration is abusing its power to attack access to reproductive health care. She added that California law recognizes abortion as a constitutional right and that insurance plans must cover it.
