Governor Newsom said today following a conference with the White House, that California will open on its own schedule with the blessing of President Trump. The Governor is also granting additional emergency sick leave for food workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of President Trump’s announcement of a plan to reopen the U.S. economy, Governor Newsom and other governors spoke with the President, Vice President, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and others. Newsom said that the President is no longer asserting ‘total authority’ over when and how states can relax their social distancing orders.

“Recognizing the differentiation that exists and persists in terms of conditions in counties, not just in states, across this nation,” said Newsom, “and a willingness to recognize and extend that very directly to governors of the need for a phased approach, a thoughtful and judicious approach, based upon conditions.”

The President wants states to reopen by May 1st, but governors who think that’s too soon are free to take longer, and Newsom almost certainly will. The Governor also announced some new relief for workers along the food chain, from the fields, to grocery stores, to restaurants, to grocery stores, to delivery people. Two extra weeks of paid sick leave for those infected, quarantined, or isolated by the coronavirus.

“We don’t want you going to work if you’re sick,” said Newsom.

The Governor also declined the opportunity to explicitly endorse Joe Biden for President, When asked why he hadn’t done it yet, the Governor said he had been so focused on COVID-19 but he certainly looks forward to endorsing Biden, and there’s little doubt that eventually he will.
