Oakland To Increase Enforcement Of Illegal Fireworks

Firecrackers - Fireworks

The continued igniting of illegal fireworks in Oakland has led to an increase in noise complaints, prompting action from Mayor Libby Schaaf.

“These explosions are traumatizing our veterans who suffer from PTSD, our pets, our essential workers who are deprived from their sleep,” Mayor Schaaf said.

The city will be increasing enforcement on the Fourth of July holiday.

“You may in fact see road closures, blockage to parking lots,” Mayor Schaaf told KCBS Radio. “We want to cut off access to the known hotspots for illegal fireworks.”

Most complaints started appearing on social media around Memorial Day and have continued without pause. The complaints are coming from all areas of the city.

“We have never seen fireworks like we are right now,” Mayor Schaaf said.
