The renaming of Sir Francis Drake High School in Marin County is at least a year away.

"Yeah, that’s a bunch of (expletive)," one man told KCBS Radio. "I’ve been here my whole life. I’m a Redwood (High School) boy, but I dated a bunch of girls from Drake. Sir Francis Drake. It’s an icon. It’s been here ever since."

He said he’s open to changing the "Sir Francis Drake Boulevard" street name as well, which the City of Larkspur has opted to form a committee to look into.

Officials in the Tamalpais Union High School District have said they will tackle a name change for the school this fall. In all, it could be a nine-month process. The high school was named for Sir Francis Drake in 1951.

The debate comes as a worldwide conversation has grown over controversial statues and monuments.
