A police shooting left a man dead inside the Walmart on Hesperian Blvd. in San Leandro on Saturday afternoon.
We’re told two officers arrived on scene shortly after 3:12 p.m. Saturday following a reported robbery. The initial report said the suspect was brandishing a baseball bat.
"We're still trying to determine the exact manner in which this occurred," San Leandro Police Lieutenant Dan Henderson told KCBS Radio.
Henderson said the officers quickly realized no robbery was taking place, but attempted to subdue the man anyway.
"Both officers deployed their tasers, which was not successful. After those (taser) deployments, one officer fired one shot, striking the suspect in his upper torso and the suspect has been pronounced dead," Henderson said.
One of the two officers, described as a 20-year veteran of the force, shot the suspect.
The suspect has only been identified as an African American.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Henderson told KCBS Radio both officers left the incident unhurt. The officer that shot the man has been sequestered at the station and will be placed on administrative leave.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The store is located at 15555 Hesperian Blvd.
