Simultaneous rallies were held around the country this afternoon with at least 70 at public defender offices calling for racial justice.

Demonstrators repeated George Floyd’s last words outside the Hall of Justice in San Francisco.

“To public defenders: Black lives matter!” chanted the demonstrators.

“We are about 3 percent of a population here in San Francisco,” she proclaimed. “But as we stand in front of the Hall of Justice, we, as Black people are over 50 percent of the jail population.”

San Francisco Public Defender Manu Raju told the crowd that communities of color routinely face bias.

“I’ve been receiving email after email, after email since Friday about reallocation resources away from law enforcement toward community led organizations,” he said. “And I want to let everyone know in San Francisco that we, at the public defenders’ office, hear you.”
