Safeway is looking to hire more than 2,000 workers across the Bay Area.
The mass hiring effort by the American supermarket chain is an attempt to keep the shelves stocked during the coronavirus outbreak-fueled shelter-in-place orders, which has caused shoppers across the nation to flock to grocery stores in droves over the past couple of weeks.
The company is looking to fill positions for full-time and part-time clerks in the deli, floral and coffee departments. It is also hiring cashiers, night crew and delivery drivers.
Safeway is now seeking more workers for at over 165 Bay Area locations to keep up with the demand.
One after another, shopping carts filled with groceries out of the Safeway in Walnut Creek.
“We just got frozen food to kind of go with what we stocked up for our pantry,” one shopper told KCBS Radio.
Shoppers were still out to stock up on food for the week after the mandatory shelter-in-place went into effect in Contra Costa County.
“Actually, I’m surprised this many people are even out, it’s amazing to me,” another shopper said.
Shopper, Sue, thinks the mass hiring is a good idea.
“Obviously they have to keep the shelves stocked, soil the trucks can make it through, we want the toilet paper back out there,” Sue told KCBS Radio.
