San Francisco has joined the trend of closing some city streets to traffic so that walkers and cyclists can stay farther away from one another during the shelter in place. The city made the move after facing recent criticism for not making the move after Oakland did.

The preliminary list of a dozen streets will see closures to traffic, or at least a reduction in traffic, cars, and Muni busses. The streets include 20th Ave, Holloway, and Scott Street, among others. It’s a good start according to Brian Wiedenmeier, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

“They are largely on the West side and some of our densest Eastern neighborhoods like South of Market and the Tenderloin don’t have any identified streets at this point,” said Wiedenmeier, “that’s where we think they really are most needed.”

Some San Francisco Supervisors, like Aaron Peskin and Matt Haney, took to Twitter saying they feel the same way. They said they would like to see closures in the more dense neighborhoods, the ones they represent. The city said in a statement “this is an important way to keep people safe when out exercising, or cycling, or walking to essential trips - especially as the weather gets nicer.”

“You’re sharing the road with fewer cars, but often they’re travelling faster and it can feel just as dangerous,” said Wiedenmeier, “this is a really good first step in adapting our street network here in San Francisco to serve this very unique time that we're in.”
