The iconic City Lights bookstore in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood reopened this week and the world-renowned business has a whole lot of donors to thank.

Once they closed the doors because of the coronavirus pandemic, reopening them was anything but a sure thing. So, the independent bookseller decided to hold a fundraiser.

"In the first part of the shutdown, we had absolutely no income," City Lights Executive Director Elaine Katzenberger said. "The goal that we set was $300,000. I think that in one day we raised more than that. By the end, it was just about half a million (dollars)."

A reported 9,000 people helped raise the money.

Now, they’re good to bring staff back and to stay open, at least through the end of the year.

City Lights quietly opened at the start of the week. The word is spreading.

"When you take it for granted, you really don’t think it matters," Katzenberger told KCBS Radio. "They’ll just dial it up and get it sent it to me. But when that’s all you have, you realize that is not a full life or the kind of world we really want to live in."

Extremely excited to announce that our doors are open today at 12PM for customers to enter the store! (please wear a mask)We've changed a few things around, and have a cap for how many people can be in the space at one time, so we thank you for your patience. pic.twitter.com/oa1QutnljR
