Many restaurants are barely scraping by offering takeout food and delivery.
San Mateo is working ahead on a plan to offer more seating for restaurants while maintaining social distancing, meaning streets will likely be closed to allow for proper space as diners come back to the new normal when the crush of the coronavirus pandemic eases. The idea is to offer socially-distanced outdoor seating to support restaurants.
San Mateo Mayor Joe Goethals told KCBS Radio it's a new way of life and community.
Social distancing requirements will take away restaurant seating, making business models and financial projections difficult.
"In order to distance the tables a safe distance apart, you would end up with a half to a third of the same number of tables, and many restaurants would never open their doors for that," Goethals said.
They are working to make sure all doors are open again.
