San Rafael launches new outdoor dining event amid coronavirus pandemic

Despite ongoing coronavirus restrictions, businesses in San Rafael have found a way to make the most of warm summer nights and outdoor dining.

Every Thursday night, restaurants downtown are bringing tables outside under newly installed bistro lights that extend all along 4th Street, mimicking the feel of strolling down a European alley.

“I think it’s wonderful, I think it’s great,” said one resident who came out for the inaugural “Dining Under the Lights” event.

The tables are spaced out six feet apart to observe physical distancing and workers are wearing masks, but said despite the COVID restrictions it was great to return to some sense of normalcy.

“We are so so so excited,” said Tasha, with Tavern on 4th, which has partnered with Big Jim’s BBQ to serve drinks as bars are still closed. “It’s like the first time we get to get out into the community and be around each other, but still social distanced.”

“Since yesterday I believe we have already 35 reservations. That tells you that people really want to come out, you see what I mean?” said Franz Felix, who owns Caribbean Spice. The event is bringing much needed business to his restaurant, but also giving residents something they have been craving.

“People been staying home for a long time. So right now it’s a time for them to get out and to enjoy life,” he said.

Neighbor Collin agreed. “We are social by nature, right? It’s just who we are. We just have to overcome and take the right precautions.”

This event will run every Thursday from 5-9 p.m. all summer.
