On Sunday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she would call the House to return to session this upcoming week, as congressional Democrats confront a crisis within the United States Postal Service.
Democrats are also calling on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to testify in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
Congressman Adam Schiff said he wants him gone.
“Well, he seems to be affirmatively sabotaging the postal service, as a way of serving the President's political needs,” Schiff told KCBS Radio. “The President’s made it abundantly clear he doesn’t want people to vote by mail, although he's happy to vote by mail himself.”
Pelosi will call the House to return to session to vote on the “Delivering For America Act,” which prohibits the Unites States Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service it had in place on Jan. 1, 2020.
“The postmaster is taking sorting machines offline,” Schiff said. “He is making changes in overtime policy to delay the mail. It’s having the effect of delays around the country.”
Schiff said he thinks this will keep many Americans from voting.
“To do such a thing on the eve of an election in which, because of the pandemic, millions and millions will have to vote by mail, is just an egregious abuse of that office and this is, I think, done for a very political reason,” Schiff added. “It will disenfranchise potentially tremendous numbers of Americans, and he needs to go.”
