(KCBS Radio) - A surprising amount of weekend snowfall in the Sierra Nevada means you will need snow chains in some parts of California's high country.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect Monday after a cold blast of winter arrived on Saturday afternoon, according to Mark Deutschendorf, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Reno.
"Some places got up to an inch, even around the city, just above the valley floor, but we did have some local reports of over six inches about 20 miles or so north of Reno."
A Sacramento man told CBS-13 that he was well prepared for a night of snow camping.
"I've got a lot of clothes. Bundle up, keep a good fire going," he said. "I think we'll be alright."
Snow fell as low as 5,000 feet, which means authorities are requiring drivers to have chains on their tires on Interstate 80 near Donner Pass and Highway 88, but not on Highway 50.
Deutschendorf tells KCBS Radio there's no real correlation between this early snowfall and the prospect of snowier-than-normal winter.
Lake Tahoe is now recording lows in the 30s and daytime highs in the 40s.
