One of the largest-ever food donations made in recent years to the San Francisco Marin Food Bank has been delivered to the organization’s San Francisco warehouse. It was enough chickens to serve 117,000 meals, and it couldn’t have come at a more important time.

The frozen chicken breasts came by big rig from a Foster Farms warehouse in the Central Valley.

“It’s gonna be super helpful because normally we have to purchase protein, we don’t get a lot of protein donated,” said food bank spokesperson Keely Hopkins, “so this is incredible.”

And yet, as generous as the donation might be,117,000 portions of chicken will only go so far considering the San Francisco Marin Food Bank now provides enough food each week for 55,000 people. That is an increase of 20,000 more each week than before the COVID-19 lockdown.

“We anticipate that need will continue as long as this pandemic continues, and even after,” said Hopkins, “we’re projecting serving about 25% more food for the next several months, even after the shelter in place orders are lifted.”
