San Francisco Mayor London Breed called the actions of more than 1,000 people who gathered at Ocean Beach Saturday night for a Burning Man celebration “reckless” and "selfish" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Last night, over 1,000 people crowded on Ocean Beach to celebrate Burning Man. This was absolutely reckless & selfish. You are not celebrating. You are putting people's lives at risk. You are putting our progress at risk. No one is immune from spreading the virus.

Mayor Breed said she had heard people would return Sunday night, and tweeted that law enforcement will be patrolling.

The parking lots at Ocean Beach have been closed.

On Saturday night, large bonfires were burning on the sand and in the lots. Garbage cans were set on fire.

Beachgoer Collin told KCBS Radio that he didn’t attend the event, but was on the beach in the late afternoon before it apparently got out of hand.

“They had like a two-story bus, kind of similar to what they would have at Burning Man, like a big party bus,” he said. “And, they had full speakers set up, playing music out onto the beach. So, it honestly felt a bit normal for a little bit, but probably not the best for the times.”

Many on the beach said they felt it was irresponsible, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think if people gather on the beach and enjoy, I don’t think that’s too harmful,” said one woman. “But, setting fire to a trashcan or public spaces, and you know, ruining things for others – that's definitely disrespectful.”

The Burning Man celebration is usually held in the summer months in the Nevada desert, but was cancelled this year due to the pandemic.
