A busy stretch of I-680 northbound near Fremont was closed on Monday morning due to a big rig truck that crashed and leaked fuel on the freeway.
The spill from the truck that jack-knifed at 1;45 a.m. was treated as hazardous material.
All northbound lanes near Vargas and Andrade roads were shut until approximately 8:45 a.m. when authorities reopened two lanes.
By then, many drivers had endured hours trapped in their cars while some had sought to get off the highway by driving along the median.
Drivers who stretched their legs and answered the call of nature were returning to cars as the lanes reopened. Other vehicles appeared to have been possibly abandoned.
