Tips For Staying Safe And Cool During A Heatwave

It’s another very hot day all around the Bay Area, with temperatures in some areas reaching triple digits Sunday.

To stay safe as the heatwave continues, people will want to stay indoors - in an air-conditioned space, if possible – said National Weather Service Meteorologist Gerry Diaz.

If residents do need to go out, Diaz said he advises taking it easy to avoid heat exhaustion.

“If you feel faint or dizzy, or have excessive sweating, if you have cool, pale, clammy skin, any signs of nausea - those are usually signs of heat exhaustion,” he told KCBS Radio.

People should also check on elderly relatives and neighbors, and take special care of pets.

Michael Wiggins of San Francisco is fostering three kittens, and even though it isn’t as hot in the city as other parts of the Bay Area, he’s still keeping an eye on them.

He gives them plenty of water, anyway, but this weekend, he’ll put an ice cube in.

"Kittens, especially, like to bat that around, as a toy,” Wiggins said. “But, just try to create as many cool, shaded areas in the house as possible.”

Wiggins is also taking care of himself by staying hydrated and keeping the shades of his apartment drawn.

A Spare the Air alert is in effect through Monday, as well.
