San Francisco is breaking ground on a new park that will be built on top of the Presido Parkway near the Golden Gate Bridge.

The free open space, called Tunnel Tops, will span 14 acres, connecting the Presidio's Main Post to Crissy Field.

Lead architect James Corner said the park offers expansive views of the San Francisco Bay.

"It wasn't so much about creating a design that showed off because it doesn't need to. The place itself is spectacular," he told KCBS Radio during a Wednesday tour of the site.

Corner has designed trails, gardens, a community plaza and a youth education center. He hopes it will bring people together to play, learn, relax and socialize.

"This would be a point of arrival. There could be educational moments in terms of the history of this place, the ecology, the environment and the culture of this place," he said.

Greg Moore, founder and CEO emeritus of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, said this presents a rare opportunity to build a large park in a dense urban environment.

"More people are looking for places to get out of the day to day," Moore said. "As you look at how San Francisco is getting more dense, as more high rises go up, it can be known as a great place to work, but a place that's a great place to work needs a great place to play."

The project is expected to cost $110 million. Moore said his non-profit is working to raise donations to fund the park.

Completion is set for fall 2021.
