Twitter Suspends Thousands Of Right-Wing 'QAnon' Accounts

Twitter has announced it's taking further action on so-called "QAnon" activity by permanently suspending thousands of accounts connected to the far-right movement.

The company is pursuing accounts that specifically tweet about those topics, those who violate the company’s multi-account policy and accounts that coordinate abuse around individual victims.

QAnon conspiracy theorists believe in a secret plot by an alleged "deep state" against President Donald Trump. Other fringe beliefs within the QAnon movement involve widespread sexual abuse of minors by those within the government and celebrities, baseless claims about mass shootings and theories about 5G cellular networks causing the coronavirus.

We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behavior that has the potential to lead to offline harm. In line with this approach, this week we are taking further action on so-called ‘QAnon’ activity across the service.

The San Francisco-based social media company said late Tuesday it will no longer serve content and accounts associated with QAnon in Trends and Recommendations. The platform will also block URLs associated with QAnon from being shared on its service.

"As we work at scale to protect the public conversation in the face of evolving threats, we’ll continue to lead with transparency and offer more context on our efforts," the company said in a tweet.

The actions will be rolled out this week.

Just last week, the company made headlines when accounts of several prominent celebrities and politicians were hacked as part of a Bitcoin scam.
