Volunteers grabbed buckets Sunday to clean up public spaces around Oakland, removing trash and recyclables from areas where recent protests have been held.
Urban Restoration organized the "Matter Out Of Place Clean Up and Art Walk."
The idea was to clean up what doesn’t belong and enjoy the things that do, like new Black Lives Matter murals that line the downtown.
"We’re out here," Micki MacArthur said. "This is how you make it. You know, it’s all about leaving no trace. It's like we would want to leave places better than we found them. So, like, we’re out here to have our voices heard for Black Lives Matter and this is how, this is how we contribute."
Emmett rode in the wagon. Oliver was busy cleaning up.
"(He’s) very experienced," MacArthur laughed. "This is something he loves to do. Kind of, you know, his version of being a superhero."
Steven Chun says picking up MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) is only part of it.
"We’re here to check out the inspiring Black Lives Matter murals and just to help, you know, practice self-reliance in our own communities, we want to connect in the visuals that care about their cities that care about black lives and that care about the environment."
