A once-wayward mammal found well inland from the San Joaquin Delta is now at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, where medical staff say he's in good shape.

Gilligan, who is considered a young, male sea lion, took an adventure too far and was found by CHP officers on farm land whole two miles from I-5 in San Joaquin county.

Dr. Shawn Johnson is with the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, and he told KCBS Radio that Gilligan was doing what sea lions can do.

“It’s not unusual to see them up in the delta, all the way to Stockton even,” Dr. Johnson said. “They’re looking for food like fish up and down the delta.”

He explained that males are migrating right now down to the islands, where all the sea lions go for breeding in June.

“They’re young, and male and exploring, and they probably occasionally get lost,” he said.

Gilligan was fully checked out by the Mammal Center, is in good health and could be released into the wild within days.

UPDATE ⚠️ You might have heard about #CaliforniaSeaLion Gilligan, who we rescued yesterday thanks to help from @CHP_Valley and @SJSheriff near I5 and 205 east of Tracy, CA. Our expert veterinary team completed an admission exam earlier today where #Gilligan... pic.twitter.com/EOBNwmvpOy
