Visitors Lose Chance To Stop And Smell The Daffodils

Daffodil Hill, a tourist attraction in California's Gold Country, has shut down indefinitely, because the site has become too popular, the owners announced.

Located near the town of Volcano, the hill is only open when the flowers bloom, which only happens for about two weeks per year.

The owners of Daffodil Hill announced its closing via Facebook on Monday, saying that they were not equipped to handle the safety hazards created by the popularity of their property.

Some drivers had to wait two hours to park during the bloom this year, the family said. Rather than wait, some parked illegally and in dangerous locations, the family said.

"This decision is the most difficult that we, as a family, have ever made," the statement said. "The generations that came before us who purchased this property in 1887, which evolved into Daffodil Hill, could never have envisioned that their efforts would have ever grown into such a beloved attraction."

There is only a field and the adjacent county road, but no parking lot for thousands of visitors who've begun making the trek to Daffodil Hill, county Supervisor Jeff Brown said.

“It’s a very beautiful area,” Brown said. “This has been in Amador County for numerous years. We have volunteers who escort people around, and do little fundraisers here. But the biggest problem is parking.”
