With the Outside Lands Festival returning to Golden Gate Park and San Jose Jazz Summer Fest taking place on 14 stages in Downtown San Jose, this weekend should have something for every music fan. There will also be Filipino music, dance, culture and food at the 2-day Pistahan Festival at Yerba Buena Gardens. And the Oaktown Half (half marathon, that is, along with a 5K race) will fill the streets of Oakland with runners on Sunday morning. Beyond that, there’s a Raiders pre-season game Saturday night, a martial arts event at the Cow Palace on Saturday, and two days of motorcycle racing in Sonoma.

SOUTH BAY:


Fri, Aug 9 (6pm-11pm); Sat, Aug 10 (Noon-11:30pm); Sun, Aug 11 (11am-8pm):

San Jose Jazz Summer Fest takes place all this weekend in downtown San Jose at indoor and outdoor venues, centered on Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park. All 14 stages are within walking distance of each other. Some events are free; others require a ticket purchase. Here's the artist lineup

  • Pro tip: Summer Fest’s “Getting Here” page lists some convenient downtown garages and lays out your public transit options (VTA buses will get you from CalTrain Diridon or Warm Springs BART to the downtown area). Four VTA lines will re-route due to Summer Fest.
  • Areas and roadways affected: There will be a whole slew of streets closed in downtown San Jose all weekend long. Check out this page before you drive to or through the area.

EAST BAY:

Sun, Aug 11 from 7am-11am:The Oaktown Half is an Oakland half-marathon race starting at 7am (in addition to a 5k that starts at 9:45am and a kids’ run, “Stomper’s Stomp,”,that happens at 11am). Start and finish line for all events is at Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of Oakland City Hall.

  • Pro tip: AC Transit says that from 5am-11am, there will be detours on Lines 1, 6, 12, 14, 18, 19, 20, 29, 33, 40, 51A, 57, 62, 72, 72M, 72R, 88, 96, 800, 801, and NL. The race will affect service from West Oakland to Lake Merritt, with most service in Downtown Oakland serving a temporary transit center along Castro Street. During this time, there will no bus service to Jack London Square, Oakland Amtrak, or Lake Merritt BART station.
  • Areas and roadways affected: Major streets that are part of the course include Broadway, Telegraph Avenue, 14th Street, Lakeshore Avenue, Grand Avenue, Madison Street, and 3rd Street. Roads will reopen by 11am.

Sat, Aug 10 at 5pm: Oakland Coliseum: Preseason football: Raiders play the Los Angeles Rams. Note that in addition to the Raiders-Rams exhibition game, there will also be a concert at Oracle Arena by the popular Mexican band Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga, with a showtime of 8pm. So the Raiders game may be ending just as the concert is beginning.

  • Pro tip: To help with Saturday evening travel to and from the Coliseum/Arena complex, BART will run longer trains on both the Richmond-Warm Springs and Daly City-Pleasanton line and will deploy extra event trains.
  • Areas and roadways affected: Drivers may encounter extra traffic on I-880 in both directions, on the ramps at 66th Avenue/Zhone Way, on San Leandro Street and Hegenberger Road, etc.

PENINSULA:

Sat, Aug 10 from 4pm-??: Cow Palace: Mixed Martial Arts “Rumble in the Bay” is bound to go past 10pm, because that’s the start time for the final bout). URCC (Universal Reality Combat Championship partners with “Zhong Luo’s Dragon House” for this event showcasing fighters from Hawaii to China and across the Pacific Region.

  • Pro tip: Lot parking will cost drivers $15. Public transportation riders coming from either the Balboa Park BART station or CalTrain’s Bayshore station will need to catch a bus for the remainder of the trip (A visit to the Cow Palace’s public transportation webpage can’t hurt
  • Areas and roadways affected: In northernmost Daly City: Could be extra traffic on Geneva Avenue west of Bayshore Blvd.

SAN FRANCISCO:

Fri, Aug 9 (noon-10pm). Sat, Aug 10 (noon-10pm); Sun, Aug 11 (noon-9:40pm):

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is the setting for the 12th Annual Outside Lands Festival. About 225,000 people are expected to attend this music and arts festival at the Polo Field, Hellman Hollow, and Marx and Lindley Meadows. Featured acts include Paul Simon, Childish Gambino and Twenty One Pilots. To see a map of the Festival grounds, go here.

  • Pro tip:   One way to get to the Festival is via a shuttle bus that runs from Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to the Festival. The 3-day cost is $49.50. There are regional shuttles as well. The information on those options is at the Festival’s Transportation page Another way to get there is via Muni. On all three days, Muni will provide supplemental service on the N-Judah, 5R Fulton Rapid, 7 Haight/Noriega, 7X Noriega Express, 28 19th Avenue, 28R 19th Avenue Express, and 29 Sunset routes. BART is advising festivalgoers to offboard at Civic Center Station and transfer to Muni's N Judah light rail line or 5R Fulton Rapid bus line. There will also be extra BART station agent support at Civic Center to help festivalgoers.
  • After the concert, from approximately 9:30pm until 11:30pm, the 5X Fulton Express bus service will operate one-way express eastbound departing from Fulton/36th Avenue and Fulton/30th Avenue and traveling express (non-stop) to Hyde and Grove streets near Civic Center BART Station. There will also be supplemental service, from approximately 3pm until 11pm, on N Judah trains from La Playa to Caltrain Station.
  • Areas and roadways affected:  Many roadways within the park and entrances to the park are closed for the duration of the festival. For full information on these closures, see the mailer the organizers sent to the park’s neighbors.

Sat, Aug 10 and Sun, Aug 11 from 11am-5pm: The Pistahan Festival will take place at Yerba Buena Gardens. The largest celebration of Filipino-American culture, art, music, dance, and food in the U.S., this admission-free festival is expected to draw 80,000 people over the course of the weekend, according to organizers.

  • Pro tip: Yerba Buena Gardens is only an eight-minute walk from either the Powell or Montgomery BART/Muni stations, so public transit is highly recommended over driving. Nonetheless, the Festival’s Transportation and Parking page does lay out some paid parking options, along with a map of the Festival site (CTL-mousewheel to enlarge).

Sun, Aug 11: MUNI’s 25-Treasure Island route will resume service to the Salesforce Transit Center; in fact, the Transit Center will be the only stop in Downtown San Francisco for the 25-Treasure Island (Muni lines 5, 5R, 7, 38, and 38R already serve the new Transit Center, as do Golden Gate buses).

NORTH BAY/SOLANO:

Sat, Aug 10 and Sun, Aug 11 (Events start at 8am both days): Sonoma Raceway hosts the Cycle Gear Championship of Sonoma. It’s motorcycle racing in 5 classes, from the premier Superbike class to the Junior Cup class, where competitors can be as young as 14.

  • Pro tip: Full event schedule is here. A lot of attendees will be riding their own motorcycles to and from this event, partly because there’s an area where you can park your motorcycle that’s for sale.
  • Areas and roadways affected: Possible extra traffic on Hwy-37 and Hwy-121/Arnold Drive; certainly extra traffic in the immediate vicinity of Sears Point and the Raceway.
