Rickey Gates is one of a few people who can say he’s ran up and down every street of San Francisco.

“In order to really get to know a city on the most intimate way possible was to set off with this goal,” he said.

To accomplish the feat, he ran 30 miles, more than a marathon, every day for 46 days. Along the way, he logged about 150,000 feet of elevation gain, which is more than five times the height of Mt. Everest.

"It was a substantial physical effort," said Gates.

I started this crazy project yesterday - Every Single Street - wherein I'll be running every street of San Francisco over the next six weeks. Day one - Started off on the Golden Gate Bridge and made my way to the far southern part of the city. #everysinglestreet -- @MRPfilm pic.twitter.com/7aqTFgY9cU

Gates, who has lived in San Francisco for six years, met people from all walks of life in neighborhoods he had never been to before.

“There were entire swaths of the city that I had never even stepped foot in,” he said.

He calls it his Every Single Street project. He embarked on the citywide journey after a cross-country run from the South Carolina coast to Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

“It required a little bit of creativity and willingness to step outside your comfort zone,” he said. “Our access to seeing the most beautiful places in the world is at our finger tips and I’ve certainly taken advantage of that.”

He hopes to run across North America in the coming years.

So honored to have some folks come out and experiment in this project with me today at Treasure Island. Tried out one of Professor Otte’s routes to cover all the blocks most efficiently. Closed streets and others that seem to not exist challenged the equation and improv was needed. Thanks to @penabrand for being my Magellan, to @salomonrunning for keeping rubber on my soul and @banditwines for fueling the fire.
