Two teenagers who went to high school in Mill Valley have allegedly confessed to their alleged roles in the fatal stabbing of an officer there last week.

Italian authorities said that former Tamalpais High School classmates Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, 18, and  Finnegan Lee Elder, 19 were vacationing when a drug deal escalated into violence.

The dealer allegedly sold them a substance other than the cocaine, which they had sought to purchase, according to reports.

The teens allegedly stole the dealer's backpack, leading to a confrontation with two Italian military police in plainclothes. Investigators said that Elder repeatedly stabbed Vice Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega of the Carabinieri police force, according to the Associated Press. The slain officer had just returned to work from his honeymoon.

There's a controversy simmering over how Italian police treated the teens after detaining them on Friday. A photo shows Natale-Hjorth in a blindfold, which an official from the Carabinieri told the AP was illegal.
