The cover of the latest issue of TIME magazine is a startling picture of all 253 names of cities where there have been mass shootings this year.

The black-and-white image creating a buzz was created by a Bay Area artist who conjured another one of the magazine's memorable covers last year.

"Hopefully, people take it to heart," he said to KCBS Radio.

Mavroudis included cities where four or more people were injured or killed, not counting the shooter.

He was busy creating the artwork when it suddenly hit him that he was using the names of cities he knew, like Richmond, Vallejo, San Francisco and his hometown San Jose.

"It was pretty eye opening," said Mavroudis. "It cuts across red states and blue states, big cities and small towns, so it was a lot to squeeze in there and find a place for everything."

The issue is available now.
