San Francisco’s Buena Vista Horace Mann Elementary School

Falling ceiling tiles, restrooms full of trash and rat feces have turned San Francisco's Buena Vista Horace Mann Elementary School into a wasteland, according to parents, teachers and students.

The dilapidated, dirty conditions were documented online by parents.

So far, school district officials have not said what actions may be taken to correct the situation.

The parents posted photos online that clearly show garbage piled up in a girls restroom, holes punctured in walls, and water-stained hanging ceiling tiles.

One teacher claimed that part of a classroom ceiling fell on her desk two years ago. She said she was told by district maintenance workers that the whole ceiling needed replacing, but that apparently has not taken place.

Parents said repeated complaints to the San Francisco Unified School District have gone unanswered. One woman told the news website Mission Local that she had brought the matter up at a school board meeting last week.

Because classes have ended for the year, a KCBS Radio reporter was unable to go inside the campus and get a firsthand look.

A district spokesperson told KCBS  Radio on Thursday that the district is addressing those concerns, but with 120 school sites, maintenance staff received 20,000 work requests a year, and must focus most of its efforts on critical life-safety issues.
