Coffee drinkers may soon have to pay extra for a disposable cup in San Francisco.
An ordinance up for review on Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors would charge customers $0.25 unless they use a reusable mug.
Another piece of the proposal by Supervisor Aaron Peskin seeks to reduce the amount of plastic forks, knives and spoons that are included with meals delivered through DoorDash and Grubhub.
"Hopefully, San Francisco will become a national and international leader in changing consumer behavior," Peskin said. "We have a societal imperative to clean up our oceans, to clean up our beaches."
The money raised from the disposable cup fee would be kept by coffee shops and other retailers to use for recycling.
To cut back on the amount of single-use cutlery included in food deliveries, customers would have to check a box to request such items when placing their orders.
