A 14-year-old boy died after falling near shore while playing with a group of friends in shallow water at Crissy Field on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Rescuers pulled his body from the San Francisco Bay more than an hour after he was last seen struggling.
They administered CPR and inserted a tube for breathing into his throat but the unidentified teen was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Although the boy was with friends cooling off on the hottest day of the year, he did not know how to swim, San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Jonathan Baxter told KCBS Radio.
We are sad to report, despite extensive efforts, that the 14yo male victim has succumbed to his drowning. Our heartfelt condolences and support go out to his family https://t.co/K344CWCPwf
