UC-Berkeley's police department announced that officers had arrested the suspect who was recorded punching a volunteer with a conservative student group last month.

Zachary Greenberg was apprehended on Friday afternoon, university police said, after the Alameda County district attorney's office issued an arrest warrant.

The university's statement provided few other details about the case's progression.

"UCPD will formally present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of the filing of criminal charges. Once the matter is presented and reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office, additional information will be made available regarding a charging decision," the statement said.

Police initially sought a warrant from the district attorney on Tuesday, although Greenberg was not publicly identified by name.

The assault, which was recorded by bystanders, occurred on Feb. 19. The video shows one man punching another in the face after arguing near the tables set up by student groups in Sproul Plaza.

The person who was punched was Hayden Williams, a volunteer who was recruiting members for Turning Point USA, a right-wing student group.

Police previously said that the suspect "is not a student at, or affiliate of the University."

The case had become a rallying cry for conservatives across the country who criticized the police department for being too slow to make an arrest.
