A driver was shot in the head while passing through the Caldecott Tunnel on Sunday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver's condition was unknown on Monday morning.
A passenger was also grazed by a bullet, but the injury did not require hospitalization, authorities said.
The shooting happened before 8 p.m. in the right-hand tunnel for traffic moving west on Highway 24.
The suspect, who has not been arrested, might have been driving a white car, police said.
An investigation into the shooting closed both lanes of the tunnel for 2.5 hours.
