A pedestrian was struck and killed on southbound Highway 101 near the juncture with I-880, leading to the freeway's closure for hours and disrupting traffic in San Jose and across the South Bay on Tuesday.
The deadly collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. Investigators and other crews kept the southbound lanes shut until 1:30 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol has released few details about the circumstances of the person's death.
Traffic was rerouted from 101 onto 880, but it caused extensive backups.
