An overturned truck on Interstate 580 in San Rafael was causing a severe backup that stretched across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge into the East Bay on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred around 9:13 a.m. on westbound I-580, near where it connects with northbound Highway 101.
The delays immediately became extensive. Drivers were taking an hour or more to cross the bridge from the East Bay into Marin County.
Officials had shut I-580 at Bellam Boulevard to deal with the congestion.
Drivers were encouraged to use Sir Francis Drake Boulevard as an alternative to the freeweay and anyone with the ability to avoid the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge was urged to do so.
