Police for UC-Berkeley have asked for a felony warrant to arrest the unnamed suspect seen in a viral video punching a conservative activist on the campus's Sproul Plaza last week.

The university police announced on Tuesday that they concluded their investigation into the attack that became national news, because of its political overtones. They've asked the Alameda County district attorney's office to sign off on a warrant.

"If the warrant is issued, UCPD will immediately pursue the suspect's arrest," a department statement said.

Hayden Williams, who is not a Cal student, was punched in the face while volunteering with Turning Point USA, a right-wing group. Bystanders recorded a portion of the altercation in which the unnamed suspect confronts Williams, who was standing at a table that alluded to the Jussie Smollett case in Chicago.

Police have previously said that "the suspect is not a student at, or affiliate of the University."

Conservatives have latched onto the case and suggested more hasn't been done to find the attacker because Williams was affiliated with a conservative group in a liberal hotbed.

Wonder if it would be the same if a conservative beat up a leftist on the Berkeley Campus?Conservatives call out Berkeley police for lack of arrest one week after campus assault on activist. https://t.co/CqKF66vBt1
