SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- Bay Area residents who'd just finished complaining about the cooler-than-normal weather in May are now being baked by a heat wave.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Monday, predicting numerous places will see afternoon temperatures above 100 degrees.

Monday's temperatures were predicted to run as much as ten degrees  higher than Sunday's, which saw record high temperatures for the date tied in Oakland and San Francisco at 91 degrees.

The heat is related to a high pressure ridge which is keeping a hot air mass parked over Northern California.  Some relief is expected near the coast by late Monday with the return of a sea breeze. The National Weather Service said Tuesday would be a bit cooler near the coast and Bay but interior areas would still be hot. Overall cooling could bring temperatures to near-normal readings by late in the week.
