OAKLAND — A fatal collision between a box truck and express bus caused major delays on the Bay Bridge on Wednesday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision was reported at 4:28 a.m. when the truck had slammed into the rear of one of BART'S Early Bird Express buses on the incline section just west of the bridge's toll plaza.

The overturned truck came to a rest on the right shoulder of westbound Interstate 80. A driver and two passengers were in the box truck. One of the passengers died, a CHP Officer Bert Diaz said on KCBS Radio.

The driver and other passenger in the truck were rushed to a hospital with significant injuries, according to the Diaz.

KCBS Radio traffic reporter Bob Pryor was a passenger in the BART bus. He described being jarred awake from the impact. Another passenger appeared to have suffered a head injury, he said, although the severity of the injury was not clear. The truck had been completely caved in, Pryor said.

The CHP said that no bus passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment.

At one point, three lanes of the bridge were closed, but at roughly 8:45 a.m. only one lanes remained blocked to traffic.

The bridge backup extended onto Interstates 80, 580 and 880 as well as State Route 24. The California Highway Patrol reported more collisions in the backup.
