Major League Baseball has suspended the San Francisco Giants CEO and President Larry Baer without pay until July 1 because of the public altercation he had with his wife in the city weeks ago.
Commissioner Rob Manfred is also requiring Baer "to undergo an evaluation by an expert to determine an appropriate treatment and counseling plan," according to the statement released on Tuesday morning.
Baer, who'd been the public face of the Giants, took a leave of absence from the organization earlier this month after video surfaced showing him in a physical struggle with his wife Pam Baer in Hayes Valley. The brief clip obtained by TMZ showed Pam Baer fall from a chair and scream while Larry Baer tried to take a cellphone from her hand.
Baer said "I respect and accept the Commissioner's decision," in a statement released moments after the suspension was announced.
Last week, District Attorney George Gascon announced that Baer would not be criminally charged for the dispute. Surveillance footage from a nearby store that was obtained by authorities reportedly showed a more protracted argument between the husband and wife.
There had been growing pressure for Baer to be punished. Mayor London Breed joined advocates for domestic violence victims in saying that he needed to be held accountable for the altercation.
