OAKLAND (KCBS Radio) -- Oakland Unified School District campuses will remain open, officials said, despite a Thursday strike called by he union representing Oakland schoolteachers.
The Oakland Education Association is demanding a 12 percent pay raise over a three-year period. The school district's most recent offer is for a 7 percent raise, plus a retroactive bonus of 1.5 percent.
Picket lines sprouted before dawn Thursday at dozens of sites in Oakland. The Oakland Unified district operates 86 campuses serving 37,000 students.
The school district planned to keep campuses open, staffing classrooms with a mix of central-office personnel, school site administrators, and emergency substitute teachers.
On a typical day, 430 students attend the Manzanita Community School on East 27th Street. But today, only 14 kids showed up for class.
Overall attendance across the district may not be revealed until Friday, officials said to KCBS Radio.
