New details are emerging about the deceased gunman in the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting.
Santino Wiliam Legan, 19, comes from a well-known family in the agricultural town. His father is a celebrated runner, one of the world's fastest among middle-aged men, while his grandfather was a county supervisor who was accused and acquitted of sexual abuse.
Legan, who was killed Sunday night by police after fatally shooting three people at the popular garlic festival, is the son of Tom LeGan. The father, who is in his 50s and appears to use a different spelling of the family name, was in contention last year to set a world record in the mile for runners in his age group, according to MastersTrack.com.
Legan's grandfather, Tom Legan, served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for two terms in the 1980s. Press reports from 1988 show that he was tried and acquitted of molesting his teenage daughter. The grandfather maintained that his ex-wife manipulated their daughter into raising the charges as part of a vindictive plot to extract more financial support, according to the Associated Press report from the trial. He lost re-election four days after being acquitted.
Years later, in 2002, the grandfather was involved in a traffic accident that forced him to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He died in 2018. His obituary said he was survived by a son and four grandsons, including Santino.
The suspect is listed in other accounts as being the brother of Rosino LeGan, an amateur boxer who attended Santa Clara University. That article in the Gilroy Dispatch said that Rosino sparred with Santino and his two other brothers.
