Authorities used a helicopter to save a surfer stranded on the rocks north of Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.

The surfer was not harmed but couldn't safedy paddle away from the rocky shore beneath the Cliff House restaurant, according to San Francisco firefighters.

Rough waters made it impossible for the firefighters to pick up the surfer around 7 p.m.

Instead, the California Highway Patrol deployed a helicopter that hoisted the surfer away from the steep cliffs.
