BART officials plan to introduce a discount program that will offer discounts to riders with low incomes.
The $11 million program, which would be available on some other mass transit systems in the Bay Area, has been in the works for a long time.
"The MTC has been working for four years now on what we call a means-based transit fare discount program, said John Goodwin with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Those at 200% of the federal poverty level would qualify, which means a single person making less than $25,000 a year, or a family of four making less than $52,000.
"The discounts will be 20 percent off the regular adult fare for BART and Caltrain riders, and 50 percent discounts on Muni and Golden Gate Transit," said Goodwin.
Riders must use a Clipper Card to get these discounts. Details including eligibility guidelines and proof of that eligibility are still being worked out, but the goal is to have the discount program in effect by the end of this year, or the beginning of next year at the latest. For most Bay Area households, transportation is the third-largest monthly expense, trailing only the cost of housing and food.
