Three siblings from San Pablo died when an SUV slammed into a big rig that police say was illegally parked on the shoulder of I-80 in Emeryville early Thursday morning.
The collisions at 1:20 a.m. happened on a stretch of the freeway that curves before reaching the Bay Bridge toll plaza.
Officers found a "white SUV trapped underneath the big rig," said California Highway Patrol officer Herman Baza.
A 24 year-old male driver and his two sisters were killed while his 17-year-old brother was taken to a hospital with "major injuries," according to police.
The truck driver had pulled over to the side of the freeway to take a nap, Baza said.
The driver will be cited for being illegally parked, Baza said to KCBS Radio.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but Baza said that part of I-80 is prone to accidents..
"It's a very dangerous curve there. People tend to drive at a high rate of speed through there," said Baza. "If the roads are slick, the roads are a little wet, you're to lose control of your car very quickly."
The posted speed limit is 45 mph.
