Pedestrian safety is once again on the minds of San Francisco city leaders in the wake of yet another fatality over the weekend when a man crossing a Tenderloin street was struck by a bus.
The pedestrian was crossing at Golden Gate Avenue and Hyde Street on Saturday night, when he was hit by a Golden Gate Transit Bus. It was the third time a pedestrian was killed in the Tenderloin this year and the eighth victim in the city in 2019.
"The Tenderloin is one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians in San Francisco and it has been for some time," said Supervisor Matt Haney, who represents the area.
There should be more traffic signals that prevent drivers from making turns while pedestrians get the light to use crosswalks, Haney said.
"It's actually much safer for pedestrians and much safer for drivers as well," he said to KCBS Radio.
The deadly collision happened one block from an intersection which recently underwent those changes, although many drivers appear tp be ignoring the new rules..
