A San Jose city councilman and his family were recently booted from their rental home.
Three weeks ago, councilman Raul Peralez received word he had to move from his home in San Jose after his landlord decided to sell the property and retire.
Peralez, a former cop, his wife, their six-month-old baby and their two dogs were forced to move into a smaller townhome without a yard for $600 more per month.
Almost every housing advertisement they saw said "Close to the new Google campus."
The proposed Google mega-project is driving up rents already, according to Liz Gonzalez with Silicon Valley DeBug.
"Some family members who live in apartments very near here, they even received a call from their property managers saying that in three years their rents were going to increase dramatically," said Gonzalez said to KCBS Radio. "That's unheard of? Who gives you a three-year warning that your rent's going to increase?"
Google has promised to designate 25 percent of the housing as affordable in the project that would remake a vast swathe of downtown San Jose.
Peralez said he hopes his eviction will help him better understand the housing struggles faced by his constituents, the San Jose Spotlight reported.
