Following Sunday’s shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, officials are beefing up security at other large public events, including the Santa Clara County Fair, which kicks off Thursday.
Though smaller than others, Santa Clara County’s fair draws thousands every year with the usual family-favorite attractions of animal races, rides and square dancing.
Now for the 75th annual event, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department is increasing patrols and will have an even more visible presence at the fair.

Supervisor Dave Cortese told KPIX-5 that he wants families to feel safe following the shooting in Gilroy.
“I think what we will be able to tell you is that enough due diligence has gone into it that there’s a plan we feel good about,” he said.
Meanwhile, the organizers of next month’s San Jose Jazz Festival are working with police on additional security measures.
The Fremont Festival of Arts, which begins on Saturday, has added crash barriers to stop any vehicle attacks, as well as surveillance cameras and even an observation tower.
