The embattled businessman who allegedly orchestrated a bribery scheme that got the children of wealthy parents into elite universities also reportedly claimed that Bay Area luminaries were his clients, including ex-49er legend Joe Montana and the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
William "Rick" Singer listed the Hall of Fame quarterback and tech mastermind as his clients in a 2014 Facebook post that also named Kleiner Perkins Managing Partner John Doerr as a client. Their connection to Singer is unclear.
Federal prosecutors accused Singer of collecting hefty fees from parents, including other prominent Bay Area businessmen and Hollywood celebrities, to bribe college coaches and administrators for helping getting kids admitted to Stanford, Yale and other selective institutions. Doerr, Montana and Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs did not respond to KCBS Radio's inquiries.
Legal analyst Steven Clark doesn't think the figures named in Singer's Facebook account are likely to face charges.
"It appears at this point that just having these relationships with famous people wouldn't be enough to subject anyone to a criminal prosecution," said Clark.
Palo Alto Online reported that the August 2014 Facebook post was from the @RickSingerGettingIn account that promoted a self-published book by Singer.
